Wings

We have believers who have had different encounters with Angels, each saw a different being therefore share different descriptions regarding if they looked like men, women, have wings, if so how many or if they had no wings at all.

I want to first say that God is God and cannot be limited to man’s expectations nor will only appear as written, but in this article we are basing our conclusion on the word of God as it is written in the Holy Bible.

The following verse explaining a Vision of God seen by Ezekiel the Priest, which had four and also two wings in both verses respectively, which is very interesting;
“Ezekiel 1:5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings”.
“Ezekiel 1:23 And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies”.

Now if we look at the book of Kings regarding the Cherubims which are spiritual beings associated with the presence of God, we will see that they also had two wings;
“1 Kings 8:7 For the cherubims spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above”.
Note also that they were guarding the most Holy Place which is where the ark of the Covenant was kept, and in the following verse we can get a better description of how they looked as follows;
“2 Chronicles 3:11 And the wings of the cherubims were twenty cubits long: one wing of the one cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was likewise five cubits, reaching to the wing of the other cherub”.

Then the following verse exposes that even some of the Beasts had wings, and four of them according to Daniel’s dream;
“Daniel 7:6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it”.
Then we have the following verse which describes a “spiritual being”, which was not an angel in this instance but was female and also had wings; “Zechariah 5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven”.

It is clear in the following scripture that the Seraphims which are high order Angels had six wings;
“Isaiah 6:2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly”. However, Revelation 4:8 also reveals that Beasts had six wings also.

In the following Scriptures the Lord himself is referred to as having wings, however the size and quantity of the same was not mentioned;
“Psalms 63:7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice”
“Psalms 91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler”.

My conclusion from this reference is that Angels of different ranks had wings which varied from two to six and Beasts also had wings that varied only from four to six, therefore maybe the wings can be formed based on ranks and or and assignments. However I do not believe that the descriptions listed are the limitations on how spiritual beings can be seen, assuming that the Bible did not record every single event from the beginning of time, but recorded a sufficient amount of data that we can reference. I believe that God is new every day, and the way he shows himself and all the things relating to Heaven can differ from person to person based on what he is trying to say to that person in particular.

There is definitely room to debate, but being a believer that actually had and angelic encounter years ago, I can share that at the break of dawn a wing entered my room and with the entry there was a swoosh sound that woke me, I lay there on my back looking up trying to see the entire being but my eyes were limited to see only as far as part of the huge wing, which came towards me and went around my belly quite a few times with lightning speed making a whooshing sound then exited the room. At first I was astonished and my heart was racing, then a peace came over me, and later that morning I drew what I had seen, which was shared in my first book “Journey to Christ”, posted on Amazon Kindle.

Years prior to his incident which is also mentioned in the my first book, I have seen a “human form” Spirit standing at the doorway at a then friends house, that stayed there like a guard at the door of that place almost all night, which they later described as a friend of theirs that was gunned down. This helps me to understand that spirits can be seen in human form also, with no wings at all. Which can be familiar spirits or dead that did not rest well so are roaming, but I will not call them Angels.

However the Bible did refer to some angels as having human form whether with wings or not.

It is good to learn of the variations of Spiritual Beings, Angels and even Beasts, but the topic can hardly be concluded entirely until the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ because God is mysterious.
