The personalities of the disciples are still relevant in today’s Church and we must take into consideration that Jesus did not cut off any of the disciples because of their ways, instead he still allowed them all to follow him. We are worthless in the sight of God, and only made worthy by God’s hand being upon us, so why do we feel we are in a position to scrutinise people.
Denial
Just as Simon Peter denied Jesus three times before his arrest, there will always be that one person who will deny God’s anointing operating in the life of a believer, who will call miracles “luck!” and try to imply that God’s blessings are some sort of manipulation from a worldly source.
Great Evangelists
There are those who, just like Andrew, are very good Evangelists and will bring people to the Lord, especially their families. Andrew ensured his brother Peter was saved being a fisherman by trade, he had a natural tendency to “gather”, which was used for the Kingdom of Heaven.
Easily Angered
Additionally, we must know that not every angry person we come across is afflicted by the devil. James was known for his fiery temper, yet he was still a disciple, so when we see people angry at the wind don’t cast them out because if we are followers of Christ we have to walk in the likeness of him.
Focused on the Gospel and Salvation
It will always be easy to work alongside people like John in Ministry because he was very serious and focused, preaching the gospel and calling people into repentance and salvation. He did not play with his call at all. All of us that are deeply concerned about Jesus’ business will be happy to have some Johns, and even James (Jesus’ brother) in our circles. James (Jesus’ brother) stressed on faith and works, and highlighted trials, temptation and wisdom, also speaking against false teachers.
Integrity
Honesty along with the ability to work will always be an asset in the body of Christ. Philip was very honest and could be trusted. He served the bread and wine that Jesus multiplied, ensuring everyone was fed.
Doubters
Then there will always be that one person that will doubt every single thing we tell them concerning the wondrous working power of the Lord Jesus, just like Thomas and even Jude who both did not believe in Jesus in one way or the other, until after his resurrection. However if you give them evidence they will eventually believe. People like that always want to see proof and evidence concerning what you speak about. For them “Seeing is Believing”, and oftentimes they will try to provoke you concerning your God in heaven, whom we access in the name of Jesus.
Organized, able workers
People who know very well how to use their knowledge to benefit the body of Christ, like Matthew who moved from being a tax collector to documenting the great record that we all know as the book of Matthew will always be an asset to the body of Christ.
Betrayal
We all know that there will be people who will put money in front of loyalty and friendship, and dig their own pits of sorrow and eternal suffering just like Judas did, it’s a must because if Jesus had to face it, we as his servants are also in line to face similar, yet even when we recognize this spirit upon a person, allow them to be. God knows best! He is a righteous judge.
Popular Opinion
Being appointed by popular opinion, not always the choice of the Lord, just like how Matthias was chosen to replace Judas is something we also have to be conscious about in the body of Christ. Understanding that not everyone that is given to serve was appointed and hand picked by the Lord, yet be patient.
Radical transitions in coming to Christ
Paul chastised Christianity until he met Jesus, then he greatly contributed to the development and spread of the faith, therefore even when people show themselves as not willing to stand by our call in the Lord, constantly speaking against us, allow them knowing that as long as there is life Jesus can change them. They can be saved and become a great help for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
There are so many other personalities we can look at throughout the Gospel, especially in the various Bible stories, but in this article we focused particularly on those that walked the closest to Jesus because those that are closest in our circles would either be the channel to get to us, or there to prove if we are in fact disciples as we call ourselves, because the way we respond to people will reveal the spirit upon us, and the posture of our hearts.
Whilst we cannot be God, we all strive to be Christ-like concerning how we respond to people observing Biblical personalities that are still alive today.
So as long as you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, keep your eyes on him and remain focused no matter the various personalities that enter your circle, asking yourself what would Jesus have done?
Jesus operated from a place of maturity, knowing what to expect from people but carrying on unbothered because he knew God will judge every individual according to the deeds of their hearts, he knew his position, likewise this remains concerning us who are also in a covenant with God in Heaven.
