What is behind the Mask in Mas

Many years ago I visited an old man who used to make mas, he was the father of a friend at the time and he invited me to take a closer look into his space.

There it was observed that he had a Quran, a Bhagavad Gita, and many different versions of the Bible as well as several other types of books, some on ancient things and literature from various cultures.

Without hesitation I asked the question, why do you read every religion? He explained to me that mas is a thing where the costumes tell a story and mainly has a spiritual backing. Most of the mass he made were traditional mas, for example, dragons and sea creatures of all different types among several other themes.

This is why when we put things on and dance in them we are performing a full blown ritual, that would invoke whatever deity that was tied to it by its image or possible spells that were cast over it in the production. The sea characters represent the marine spirits. Similarly, when you go to a hindu temple you will see them dressing as the idol gods and dancing to invoke the spirit associated with the embodiment that they are trying to achieve.

You may tell yourself that you are not going to play in traditional mas, rather mud mas or “pretty mas” mainly known for a feathered two piece with sequence for females and a shorts  for men, but you are still a part of a ritual that involves dancing, portraying and the invoking of spirits for example drunken sailors, vagabonds, jammettes, among others. It is all under the label of “Culture”. There is actually a mas camp now in my locality named “Spirit”, this is because there is a spirit attached to every costume and I am more than sure that the owners understand that fact. Even on the J’ouvert morning parades, people are dressed as mud devils, sick people from the hospital, even cross dressers and some as witches. This also applies to halloween costumes, where people dress as draculas, ghosts, webs and all sorts of other creatures.

We do not just speak against carnival and halloween because we are saved and the desire to be a part of such activities has been quenched, but we have also been made aware of the actual consequences of participating in such.

As we know, rituals are also done on the set for the production of certain movies as well as music and digital games, which is why people with more screen time are inclined to depression and thoughts of suicide. You will also observe their inclination to be addicted to it in one way or the other, this is because every device of the enemy can easily become a vice.

The same applies concerning the distribution of alcohol, there are spirits that live amongst, liquor which is also a spirit by itself. Therefore if you examine the lives of people who run bars, casinos and similar establishments, you will realize that they do not live a regular lifestyle. God fearing people do not open bars nor promote the distribution of liquor and promotion of parties and related events on the whole because by doing the same you have come into an agreement to destroy the lives of others. The same applies for the distribution of drugs, sale of gambling tickets and promotion of promiscuity in every way possible.

All of the above mentioned are hidden under the disguise of “having some fun”, except it comes with detrimental consequences therefore should be known as taking a dangerous risk, as it actually is.

Let us look at the older Church, in my Grandmother’s days when service was referred to as “Sunday mas”, today the devil has twisted the same mas and has given the population a mas that celebrates and idol god, with worldy music being their worship.

This is why carnival escalates crime and accidents, spreads STD’s and STI’s, many other viral sicknesses, leads to unwanted pregnancies and abortions, promotes delinquency and spirals a famine throughout the nation where it was held. Many people walk away with large debts afterwards wondering how they got themselves into it in the first place.
