As a very young person I knew harvest to be a celebration of the crops in Trinidad places like Paramin and Cameron where farming was the biggest.
Fast forward to my arrival in Tobago I learnt that their harvest was tied to the Church especially the Anglican Church and it was a time to give back to the community.
However on visiting Belle Garden for their Harvest May 03rd 2026, I asked a family who were hosting harvest at the time we visited, if the Church is still heavily involved in the Harvest and one said Yes while another replied No at the same time, further stating that they spent from their pockets.
Therefore, I am still curious as to if the essence of Harvest has been lost or what was the real fundamentals behind it? A celebration of the crops or a celebration of the Churches ability to give back to their various communities throughout Tobago.
Q: How was Harvest really born?
Q: Does it have the same meaning today?
Q: Or is Harvest now about showing off ones kitchen and ability to prepare and share a large amount of food to be shared with loud music. Is it about validation in the Tobago space? A “pips” as we say in local slang!
